What are some frugal tips your parents or grandparents taught you? All the talk is about the importance of recycling, but the first tenet in the conservation creed is "Reduce." We have gotten away from many ways of life our parents and grandparents lived (thankfully, some of them -- e.g. only bathing once a week) and with our big, expansive homes, have forgotten how to live frugally. What are some frugal practices you grew up with? For example, keeping the thermostat set low in winter and wearing a sweater around the house. Opening the windows and running a fan instead of using the air conditioner. Closing vents off in unused rooms during heating/cooling seasons. Saving old bits of soap and either melting them down or smushing them against the new bar of soap. Reusing birthday candles. Limiting long distance phone calls. Turning off lights as you leave a room.
What are your best frugal living tips? I have read a lot of books on frugality, but I'm always interested to know what other people have come up with to make their money stretch. Please share your thrifty thoughts! Thanks!

How Do You Dry Your Clothes (Frugal tips available)? Since my apartment complex doesn't allow clotheslines outside apartments (they don't want apartments looking like shanty town), I put my clothes to dry in my car during hot days, especially, during the summertime. It dries pretty fast too. I also dry my clothes in a indoor clothesline, something that looks like this http://www.clotheslineshop.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=C&Category_Code=IC6 My clothes don't dry fast indoors, but it dries whenever it dries. I don't like to using the electric dryer that is included in my apartment because it wastes electricity and money. I am not poor or anything. I am very well off, just like to live frugally. How do you dry your clothes? Also, if you go on vacation and your hotel room has a radiator, wash your clothes daily by hand in the sink, and put a towel around your clothes and lay it on the hot radiator. It will dry your clothes! This will save you money from using laundry services. Regarding drying clothes in your car, it doesn't have to be summer, but whenever the day is going to be hot and sunny, so check the temperature in advance for the whole day! It is in the etiquette section because I'm wondering how you dry your clothes properly, if you want to call it that way.

Frugal living tips, anyone? Help? Okay, so I already cloth diaper and make my 8 month old daughter's baby food. My husband has been away training in the army so we have not had grocery expenses that include him for about four months. We will be relocating (from Iowa to Washington)in December so we are trying to save as much money as possible. Any menu/meal ideas that are inexpensive but still healthy and won't load you up on a bunch of bad carbs(sugars, white flour, etc.)? I love to cook and everything so it won't be a problem to spend more time in the kitchen than I already have to cooking my daughter's food! Any other frugal household tips such as cleaning solutions, laundry solutions, etc... would be great also. Thanks in advance!!

Ways to save $ with a new baby- frugal baby tips, please!? Looking for ways to cut down the expense of a new baby. I am due in July, quit my job a few months ago, bought a house, then hubby got a paycut... ouch! SO, I'm trying to think of all the ways, however small, we can save $ with this baby. We also have a 5 yr old son. I was thinking things along the line of- homemade baby wipes, I am cloth diapering, breastfeeding, we got all our baby items (crib, swing, high chair, car seat, stroller) at our baby shower, so we don't need to worry about that stuff. tons of clothes for the first 4 or 5 months, so we're good there. I would like to make some of my own baby clothes, if it is cheaper than buying them new (we live rural, an hour drive to any clothing stores & gas is crazy $$!) so if you have patterns for baby girl clothes, that would be great. Any other ideas on how to save $ with a baby and a 5 yr old, pass on the idea! I'd love to hear your suggestions! I am trying to make simple living a part of our lifestyle, as well as save $. thanks

Grocery shopping tips, saving money, being frugal... spiritually speaking? Yeah, I know this isn't a religious question, but R&S gives answers!!! :) I want to know what other people do, specifically, to be careful with their money, especially regarding groceries. I make a menu and all that, but I could really tighten up a little. From start to finish, what's your process? (On a spiritual note, I am working on my dollars for spiritual reasons... I want to free up more money so I can give more and be more responsible in my own life) Eat off other people's plates???!!! LOL

We pay for our own day-to-day expenses, while our parents are covering housing for us. We'd like to save $5000 for our future married life to start with, but lack tips and advice for how to do so. We are frugal, but some concrete tips from folks who have been there would be helpful. Thank you!

Can you give me some tips on frugal living? I'm looking for ways to cut my monthly outgoings as my wife and I have the baby now and I'm starting to realise we don't have as much free cash as we used to. How do you cut your grocery bill significantly? I would like to know the "frugal" way to grocery shopping. Which supermarkets in the southeast (preferably Florida) is the most economical? Is purchasing the Sunday edition ($1.00 for the Tampa Tribune, for instance) for the coupons really worth it? Share all your cost effective tips with me, please. I shop at Publix for all my needs, and it can get quite expensive despite I absolutely adore the service I get. Sometimes I buy groceries for people who are economically disadvantaged, and buying these families groceries in addition to mine is getting very expensive. I am not complaining since I want to continue to help them but at the same token I want to know how to save lots of money with groceries and other items of necessity. Thank you in advance as I appreciate all the advice I can get on this matter.

We will also be going grocery shopping every 2 weeks, so I really want a list of staple foods. I am 38 weeks pregnant, so SOME convenience or quick cook foods would be great... Also, any hints and tips on how to do groceries FRUGALLY, and household cleaners and the like FRUGALLY, I'd appreciate it... How can I be more frugal?? Help!? My fiance and I need to save some major money in the next little while, problem is- He got a surprise pay cut about a month after I quit my job to be a stay at home mom with our 5 yr old, and I am pregnant with our second baby. Before the pay cut, it would have been fine financially. Now, with me being 31 wks preg, we're in a tight spot. I need any and all tips on how we can save some money, not necessarily to bank right now, but to live on. If you have any ways we can save on everyday items and chores, let me know! We don't eat out much at all, live rural so don't do anything pricey for entertainment ($5 movie 2x a month), I use baking soda to clean, line dry our clothes, and try to use everything in our pantry before buying more... help! A Frugal Tip(Scouring Pads)? Fruit Netting The netting used to package oranges and other fruits makes a perfect soft scouring pad. Just cut the top and bottom of the bag off and fold the netting. Then, put a rubber band around the middle of the folded netting for a nice, soft pad.
Any advice on how to be frugal in this tough economy? Hello! Everyone knows money is tight for most of us these days. My husband is an extremely hard worker and yet things get difficult. We're newly married, and I'm pregnant. I want to make our money stretch and be careful with every dollar. He works so hard I don't want to waste a cent of it. However, the catch is I was raised in a very non-frugal wasteful family. So I need some advice! What ways do you save money? Any frugal tips for raising a baby that worked for you? How do you save money on some of your biggest bills? Any advice in any category on how to live more simply and waste less would be appreciated. I want to learn this art sooner rather then later! Thanks everyone! Thanks but at the moment I'm handling the money in our family as I'm the one with the time as I'm staying at home. Besides, he's admitted it's not his strong point, so I'd better get good at it and secure our future instead of being ignorant and not knowing where our money is going.
