how to maximise frugality and minimise waste but not be a called miser ? just a desire to note what others are up to; one may have a very simple or life style but achieving a better saving in their pocket. Frugality is not being miser rather it is an wiser act. But on the other hand I have the notion that if the world's population practised frugality, today we would be using clay or slate tablets to scribe upon.

How much do accomplishments matter in college essays? Books tell you to be yourself and let your personality shine through in your writing. But lets say that I write about a trip that I have and write it using vivid details, sense of voice, etc..., but I only use that one experience to show a few things about me. i.e. humility, identity, frugality, overcoming bias...but I don't really convey my whole personality. I do think that I show a very personal side of myself, but I'm not really showing the whole me or my accomplishments. Is that enough?
can someone give me an example of frugality? for english class. i need a better understanding of the word
How does one go about getting a job... any job? I'm a recent college graduate (BA in Liberal Arts), who has remained in the town of my alma mater after graduation (on account of my long-term boyfriend who is about to graduate himself and with whom I would like to stay in close proximity to). Since this decision, I have been unable to gain much meaningful employment. I apply to any jobs available for which I feel I meet experience requirements, yet I have not gotten any interviews. I've even started to included carefully proofread cover letters with everything I submit (Even for menial jobs), hoping to make myself stand out, but to no avail. While I live with incredible frugality, and make ends meet through babysitting, taking odd jobs and selling the occasional handicraft/earthly possession, I'm starting to get stressed. I really don't understand how so many others seem to be able to get a job (even mopping the floor or making burgers). How can I improve my chances? PS: I also have no car at this time, which limits my range

can anyone help me with the meaning of this quote? Frugality is one of the most beautiful and joyful words in the English language, and yet one that we are culturally cut off from understanding and enjoying. The consumption society has made us feel that happiness lies in having things, and has failed to teach us the happiness of not having things
If I believe in conservative family values and frugality yet I question Christ as the savior...? Does that essentially make me a Jew? I do not wish to oppose my will upon others. The goal of a nation is not to judge one's morality. It is to protect the liberties of people. And the very liberty that allows you to be gay allows me to value simple living. Do I seem like an Orthodox Jew?
Which of the following descriptive adjectives is least characteristic of Calvin Coolidge? a. caution b. frugality c. wordiness d. shyness e. honesty
Are Republicans priorities in Cuts to Stimulus misplaced? 40 billion in funds to states was cut. This waste help our states keep teachers, fire fighters, and cops as well as help the states help the unemployed and the poor. This was so important to Republicans to cut that that they refused to vote for the package with this in it. Are their priorities misplaced? Aren't keeping these jobs important. They tell us it is teaching the States a lesson in frugality. Is laying off people teaching anyone a lesson? Regardless of whose fault it is the States or the Govt's, it is the people we are talking about, as a Good Christian I was taught to think about them first.

Clearance rack and the Green movement? Does anyone know if there are any environmental benifits to shopping in the clearance section of a store? Thrift store shopping is clearly an environmental practice, as it re-uses products that would otherwise be at the end of their life. What about the clearance rack? They drop the prices because an item is not selling usualy, so by buying them are we rescuing them from the dumpster? Just wondering if my frugality could also be an environmental habit, or if I'm just saving money.

Regarding the current financial crisis? Why isn't anyone talking about the real cause: greed? And why isn't anyone proposing a real solution: saving, frugality, encouraging small business to flourish, etc? This is clearly a moral issue, and it seems like the folks at DAVOS only want to create another bubble so we'll all just shut up and go back to mindless consuming.
Do I need a spiffy computer case for this processor and motherboard? I am trying to build a computer with limited experience. I just ordered an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processor (3 Ghz) and motherboard (ASUS M2N-SLI deluxe AM2) from New Egg. I plan on running some games (maybe spore) but nothing insanely hard-core. Do I need a fancy computer case to house these things? I'm looking for practicality (and frugality) over bells and whistles. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Are audio books still being sold? Or has the nation's switch to frugality, especially among young people, ended their production? Or has the present state of the economy ended their production? Can we still purchase them or is that ending in favor of libraries?

What did Ben Franklin say about frugality? Is that still an American trait? Fully-worded Q-thought is this: What did Ben Franklin say about frugality? Is that still an American trait? Or has it been brainwashed out of us at a young age by advertisers? "As to whether frugality is still "an American trait" -- it's difficult and not very accurate or meaningful to attempt paint such a large and diverse group ("Americans") with such a broad brush." Why do I get the feeling you think this alot about other people's Q's? It's hard to be precise enough to satisfy your critics. The criticism was unnecessary don't you think esp when the rest of your preceeding comments were thoughtful! May I suggest you ask Q's and see how you fare! BTW my Q, if read correctly, does not mean anyone who calls frugality an American trait means or implies that it is "only" an Amercan trait. It could ,and probably is, a trait in other cultures and societies.
Why is It important to have virtues/morals? I'm writing an essay on virtues/morals & I need a little bit of information as well as opinions. It would help me a lot if everyone would give me as much information & as much of your opinions as possible. I also need to now how you guys think they might change. Another question is why you think frugality was an important virtue back in Benjamin Franklins day & why it's still important today. Frugality is the virtue about wasting nothing if you don't know. Like people buying clothes and then not wearing them. That's wasting. Thanks!
Will my fellow millionaires (& billionaires) be taking their yachts to Monaco next year if F1 goes budget? If F1 does not continue to carry the financial cachet of recent years, but becomes known more for frugality, will it still attract the well endowed following that it currently has? Come to that, will Monaco still be pleased to host a Grand Prix if the well healed choose to go to the polo instead? I somehow cannot see the marina full of 20ft Dawncraft & everyone wearing knotted hankies while opening their clingfilmed sarnies in front of the camera being a great advert. .

Does anyone have experience being married to a wealthy girl? How is it? Is it a pain in the butt? Do you feel she always needs the finest things? I am a successful guy but I have developed my success via a frugal nature. This doesn't sit well with my gf. She comes from a lot of dough, really likes me and all that, but I worry if she will get frustrated with a guy who has built his success through hard work, frugality, and risk talking, not family money. Thanks for sharing your experience/tips.
What have you learned so far? This I have learned: Pompousness is a really rotten substitute for toughness. Stinginess is a really rotten substitute for frugality. Worrying about people is a really rotten substitute for loving them. What have you learned?
A question about daydreams - Queen Elizabeth II and BIDETS? It occurred to me one day, after having a little muse to myself whilst sitting on the bog having an excellent dump, whether or not the Queen - you know Elizabeth II not Brian May & what's left of the rock group, actually has a BIDET in the Royal bathroom or bathrooms, as she's got several residences hasn't she; being as she's one of the world's richest women and all? I mean she's 81 now & after a lifetime of frugality (that means she doesn't like to spend much on things - for those of you reading this on the Kindergarten Continent) she might've decided to spash out (please excuse the awful pun) on a bit of luxury in her old age. Using that hard, thin, disinfectant medicated toilet paper what's it called now http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/household-produc... ah yes IZAL thats it, the Royal buttocks must be pretty sore by now & so she might feel that after a lifetime's service to her country she's earnt the right to a little comfort - do you think this is the case? Or do you think, which I tend to feel is far more likely, she has again gone for the cheaper option and got some soft, quilted toilet paper in all her Royal bathrooms and in the Royal handbag or maybe also one round her topdog corgi's neck a bit like one of those St. Bernard rescue dogs with the whisky or whatever alcholic beverage it is they use, for when she's on one of her foreign trips (especially in France!) and makes sure her lady-in-waiting gets well and truely stuck in good and proper whence 'one' has finished 'one's' Royal ablution? What is your considered opinion on this sensitive and embarrassing, but nonetheless very important matter in our ageing monarch's personal domestic situation? Oh Dear! I've just thought of something! I wonder! Ageing? Do you think the Royal plumbing could be faulty? Perhaps maybe she's incontinent? Ummmmm!. I wonder how much that lady-in-waiting gets paid?
The Republican party is in a "Nose Dive" according to important Conservative members. What to do? The Republican party is in a nose dive. Apparently the American people have little trust in those crying for fiscal frugality when all they did was spend more that the Democrats! Now Michael Steele is in control and making it worse for us, he is apparently a Pro-Choice leader and stated so recently! What have we done in picking this man, he was no Barack Obama!
As a result of poor soil, all of the following conditions prevaield in new england except that? Does anyone else agree that voting for a MPP is useless as they are not held responsible for their actions? Since the creation of the Provincial gov't there have been no member(s) held accountable for the failure of the gov't to maintain services, facilities and basic amenities to which they are responsible. Regardless of which party gets control or who gets to lead, there is never any improvement. Since changing the political parties doesn't seem to work (at least not in the last 200 years) is there any point to voting for a political candidate just to watch them fail and pass the buck?!? Why can't we change the system, if it's not working? Better yet, why can't we hold politicians accountable for their choices and their actions? No more freebies, no all expense vouchers or credit cards, no gifts or tax exemptions! Let the gov't be monitored by an independent company to enforce fiscal responsibility & frugality! Why are Ontario taxpayers paying for things they don't get and don't use??? Why can't we vote in a real change, instead of shuffling the players?
Scottish frugality at its best....? A Scotsman phones a dentist to enquire about the cost for a tooth extraction. "£85 for an extraction, Sir". "£85?!", the Scot exclaims. "Ha' ye no' got anythin' cheaper?" "That's the normal charge, Sir" replies the dentist. "Whit aboot if ye didnae use any anaesthetic?" "That's unusual, Sir, but I could do it and knock £15 off." "Whit aboot if ye used one of your dentist trainees and still withoot an anaesthetic?" "I can't guarantee their professionalism, and it'll be painful, but the price could drop to £40." "How aboot if ye make it a trainin' session, 'ave yer student do the extraction, with the other students watchin' and learnin'?" "I guess it would be good for the students" mulled the dentist. "I'll charge you £5, but it will be traumatic." "Och, now yer talkin' laddie! It's a deal," said the Scotsman. "Can ye confirm an appointment for the wife next Tuesday then?"

My frugality and hard work is making me feel excluded from my family. Help!? I have a full time job M-F. I also took up baby sitting Sat and Sun 3AM (yes you read correctly) until 2pm for extra money for the weekends. I am married and have a 1 year old daughter. Problem is- even though the extra baby sitting money is helpful to my family- I feel overworked and I get left out of weekend activities all the time. I can never go travel & visit the grandparents on the weekends, so my spouse takes my daughter without me. I feel like quitting this second job, but I also know the mom I'm sitting for will have a serious time finding a replacement- I mean, those hours on the weekends are pretty tough. I don't know. I feel stuck and I'm feeling sorry for myself and feeling excluded from my daughter and my spouse on the weekends. Thing is, without this extra money, we really couldn't afford to go anywhere anyway- so I'm taking one for the team. Am I crazy to keep doing this?

Examples of Bushido (Chivalry) in The Last Samurai? Can anyone please tell me of a specific scene in the movie "The Last Samurai" which illustrates a samurai behaving according to the code of bushido, which emphasizes loyalty, self sacrifice, justice, sense of shame, refined manners, purity, modesty, frugality, martial spirit, honor, and affect. If you could also tell me approximately what time into the film the example occurs at that would be greatly appreciated as well! "The Last Samurai" was loosely based on the 1877 Satsuma Rebellion

What should my "reach schools" be? On Princeton Review it says to have 1 or 2 reach schools, I'm ranked 56 in my class of like 900 and have a average of about 94 with 3 AP classes. I was really wanted to apply to Columbia (with an acceptance rate of 11%) as my reach school but is this too out of reach for me? My frugality is telling me to save the application fee money and apply to an easier school as my reach. Corrections: AN average, was WANTING. I don't usually sound this much like an idiot, I hope.
I need suggestions for a BACHELOR PARTY!? my childhood best friend is getting married and I am Designated Best Man. I need some suggestions from the crowd. Originality will be paramount but also class and frugality will be an important factor. Shoot away gentlemen
What’s it like living debt-free? Last week I repaid all my consumer debt. Only my mortgage will remain. Frugality is probably just as important to remaining debt-free as it is to reaching that goal in the first place.
who sad this? "Bad men cannot make good citizens. It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom. No free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality, and virtue; and by a frequent recurrence to fundamental principles."
Is shopping at malls and outlet stores ending and being replaced by thrift shopping? Will all the malls...? Shopping centers, and other places close and be replaced by thrift stores? Is thrift shopping a national trend and going to become dominant? Will buying used become the only way to shop? Here's an article covering this: Frugal living more about priorities than sacrifice * Story Highlights * Frugal strategies include buying foods in season, shopping for used clothing * "America's Cheapest Family": To achieve frugality you need a spending plan * Careful spending in one area can free cash for things that matter to you more * Next Article in Living » Decrease font Decrease font Enlarge font Enlarge font NEW YORK (AP) -- When mathematics professor Annalisa Crannell needs new clothes, she doesn't head for the mall or outlet stores or even discount stores. art.crannell.ap.jpg Annalisa Crannell holds a blanket she made from old shirts and an old sheet. Crannell is an aficionado of Goodwill Industries shops. And she'll pass by the racks with $7 blue jeans and head for the bins where the jeans sell for $1. She's also happy to take friends' castoffs. "Am I the biggest tightwad on the planet?" asks Crannell, a resident of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. "No. But I'm more frugal than most of the people I know." A lot of people could learn from Crannell, who teaches at Franklin & Marshall College, and others who have adopted thrifty habits that they feel are both ecologically sound and help them cope with the rapidly rising costs of food, fuel and other necessities. The word "frugal" might sound a bit old-fashioned, but the concept is as modern as today, says New York financial planner Stacy Francis. "Keeping track of where your money goes is the most important financial task you can undertake," she said. "It really doesn't matter what you make. It matters what you spend." Don't Miss * Extreme recycling: Food, furniture, diapers * 23 surprising things you can get for free * In Depth: Right On Your Money She said many people didn't worry much about money when the stock market was rising, home values were soaring and the job market was solid. Those conditions have changed, and "when cash is tight, spending needs to get tighter, too," Francis said. Some people have turned frugality into a lifestyle. Annette and Steve Economides of Scottsdale, Arizona, try to live the life they describe in their book, "America's Cheapest Family Gets you Right on the Money." The Economides, who don't use credit cards, believe consumers need to avoid debt, spend less than they earn and embrace a thrifty lifestyle. "It's not about sacrifice, it's about priorities," Annette Economides says. The couple suggests people start on the road to frugality by making a spending plan. "Some people think 'budget' is a four letter word," Steve Economides said. "It's not. And it's not a noun either. It's a verb. And it's an action verb." Budgeting requires a family to estimate future spending, based on what has happened in the past, and to set aside money to cover what a family considers important, he said. What if it doesn't look like the money will go far enough? That's where frugality comes in. Take grocery shopping. The average American family of four spends between $800 and $900 a month on food, Steve Economides said. By shopping more carefully, a family can cut that in half, he said. The Economides, who have four children, watch the store circulars and ads so they can stock up when items they use frequently are on sale. "Around Thanksgiving, when turkey goes on sale for 35 to 40 cents a pound, we buy several," she said. They limit meals out in restaurants, plan menus in advance to take advantage of seasonal -- and thus cheaper -- produce, and use coupons to hold down food costs even further. They shop just once a month, to reduce the time they have to spend in stores -- and the gasoline they use to get to and from the supermarket. For Crannell, frugal spending in some areas, like clothing, frees up money to be spent on things she cares more about. She and her husband, Neil Gussman, invested in energy-efficient windows for their home several years ago. She walks to work, but when she does drive it's behind the wheel of a Toyota Prius Hybrid car, which runs on gas and electricity. Crannell likes yard sales, especially those where an entire neighborhood cooperates because there's a bigger selection. She shops at a local farmers market and sometimes makes vegetarian meals, partly because she believes they're healthy and partly to cut down on high-cost meat. Crannell also believes in teaching her children the fine art of thrift shopping. "Nigel, my 8-year-old, loves to go to yard sales with me," she said. "He can get toys for a quarter at yard sales. In fact, he's so cute that he can get things for free. "He has more toys than he knows what to do with." E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. Good names for my blog? it is about personal finance and frugality
A Softer Side! Money for the dead? An old miser had no friends, because of his exceptional frugality. Just before he died, he called his Doctor, Lawyer, and Minister around his bedside. "I always hear you can't take it with you, but I am going to prove you can," he said. " I have $90,000 in cash under my mattress. Its in three envelops of $30,000 each. I want each of you to take one envelop now, and just before they throw the dirt on me, throw the envelops in." The three attended the funeral, and each threw an envelop into the grave. On their way back from the cemetery, the minister said, "I don't feel exactly right, I am going to confess: I needed $10,000 badly for a new church we are building. So I threw only $20,000 in the grave." The Doctor said, "I , too must confess: I am building a clinic and took $20,000, and threw in only $10,000"., The Lawyer said. "Gentlemen, I'm surprised, shocked and ashamed of you. I don't see how you could hold out that money. I threw in my Personal check for the full amount!!! Don't you understand? The Lawyer Took all the money in his own envelop, then threw in his personal cheque for the amount! Do you think the miser will withdraw the check? Don't forget to star.....or i might loose 5points for nothing. lol
